IDANTITE'M

Il y a une semaine, alors que je méditais la Parole de Dieu et que je priais pour Haïti, le Seigneur m'a inspiré ce poème en créole. Le voici donc à l'intention surtout de mes compatriotes bien-aimés.

One week ago, as I was meditating the Word of God and praying for Haiti, the Lord inspired me this poem in Creole. Here it is specially dedicated to my beloved compatriots.

Moun yo panse

HAITI & ISRAEL

HAITI & ISRAEL -- (French and English versions) --

Selon deux sources d’information concordantes, il paraît qu’Israël a été le deuxième pays à intervenir pour porter secours aux victimes du tremblement de terre qui a frappé Haïti, soit juste après la Chine et peu avant les Etats-Unis. Gloire à Dieu pour cela !
Saviez-vous aussi qu’Haïti a été en 1947 l’un des premiers et fervents partisans de la motion aux Nations Unis pour la création de l’état moderne d’Israël ? Bien avant cela, saviez-vous aussi que dans les années 1930, Haïti a accordé des visas à des centaines de Juifs qui fuyaient la persécution en Europe, à un moment où les Etats-Unis leur refusaient une telle faveur ?

According to concordant sources of information it seems that Israel was the second country to intervene to bring help to the victims of the earthquake which hit Haiti, just after China and before the United States. Praise God for that!
But did you also know that in 1947, Haiti was one of the early supporters of the United Nations motion for the creation of the modern state of Israel? And before that, did you also know that during the 1930s, Haiti issued visas to hundreds of Jews fleeing persecution in Europe at a time when the United States was refusing them entry?

HAÏTI ET LES AMERIQUES -- (English version further below) –-

Saviez-vous qu’Haïti a non seulement contribué à la libération de l’Amérique latine, en apportant son aide généreuse à Simon Bolivar, mais aussi à l’indépendance de leur puissant voisin, les Etats-Unis, via ses soldats appelés les Chasseurs-Volontaires de Saint-Domingue?

Au lendemain du terrible tremblement de terre qui a frappé Haïti, j’étais attristé d’apprendre sur Internet les propos peu charitables d’un certain télévangéliste américain sur la cause de cette catastrophe. Ma première réaction fut de penser en moi-même : « Même si c’était vrai. Que c’était à cause d’un pacte passé par les ancêtres avec le diable. Ce n’était ni le moment approprié, ni la personne adéquate pour tenir un tel discours, sans parler de la manière dont cela a été présenté. » La Parole de Dieu nous dit dans Job 6:14 « Celui qui souffre a droit à la compassion de son ami, Même quand il abandonnerait la crainte du Tout-Puissant. » De plus, pouvons-nous imaginer celui que nous appelons habituellement le Bon Samaritain (Luc 10:25-37) se poser des questions sur la cause du malheur de cet homme qui descendait de Jérusalem à Jéricho avant de venir à son secours? Pouvons-nous aussi imaginer qu’il se pose des questions sur sa nationalité, sa religion, son standing social avant de l’aider ? Tout ce qu’il savait, c’était qu’un prochain, un homme fait à l’image de Dieu, était en difficulté, et qu’il avait urgemment besoin de son aide. Jésus a pris ce Samaritain comme exemple du véritable prochain parce que sa première réaction face au malheur d’autrui n’était pas le jugement, mais la compassion!

Ça, c’était ma réponse. Toutefois, je pense que la réponse de l’ambassadeur haïtien aux Etats-Unis, Raymond Alcide Joseph, a aussi son mérite. Elle apporte un éclairage historique qui a toute sa valeur. Vous pouvez en prendre connaissance sur le lien YouTube plus bas.

HAITI AND THE AMERICAS

Did you know that Haiti not only contributed to the liberation of Latin America through its generous help to Simon Bolivar, but also to the independence of its powerful neighbor, the United States, via its unit of soldiers called Chasseurs-Volontaires de Saint-Domingue?

After the earthquake that hit Haiti, I was saddened to learn on the Internet the insensitive words of a certain American televangelist on the cause of that catastrophe. My first reaction was to think in myself: “Even if this were true. This happened because the ancestors made a pact with the devil. This was not the appropriate time, nor the appropriate person to make such statements, without mentioning the way this was presented.” The Word of God says in Job 6:14 “To him who is afflicted, kindness should be shown by his friend, Even though he forsakes the fear of the Almighty.” Moreover, can we imagine the one we usually call the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) wondering about the cause of the misfortune of the man who was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho before coming to his rescue? Can we also imagine him asking questions about his nationality, his religion, his social standing before helping him? All he knew was that a neighbor, a man made in the image of God, was in difficulty, and he urgently needed his help. Jesus took that Samaritan as example of the genuine neighbor because his first reaction in face of another’s misfortune was not judgment, but compassion!

So, that was my answer. However, I think the response of the Haitian ambassador to the United States, Raymond Alcide Joseph, has also his merit. It brings some historical light that is worth paying attention to. You can listen to it firsthand on the YouTube link below.

HAÏTI ET LA FRANCE – (English version further below) –

Le mercredi 17 février 2010, pour la première fois depuis 1804, un président français s’est rendu en Haïti pour une brève visite de moins de 5 heures. Quoiqu’historique, cette visite s’est passée quasi dans l’indifférence de l’Haïtien moyen plus préoccupé par ses difficultés quotidiennes suite au séisme. Toutefois, il est remarquable que ce fût ce président français –Nicolas Sarkozy– qui mit en garde les puissants voisins d’Haïti, en déclarant dans son discours, lors de cette visite : «Haïti pour les Haïtiens.» Remarquables aussi ses propos du Français Régis Debray pour décrire les relations entre Haïti et la France, tirés de son rapport en 2004 – Haïti et la France : Rapport à Dominique de Villepin, ministre des Affaires étrangères.

--Combien de Français savent que la Déclaration des Droits de l’Homme et du Citoyen fut initiée à Paris mais accomplie à Saint-Domingue, où les droits de l’homme blanc devinrent, presque à notre insu, universels pour de bon ? ... Combien savent encore que c’est la délégation haïtienne à la Conférence de San Francisco en 1945 qui, entraînant les votes latino-américains, et contre l’hostilité anglo-saxonne, a imposé le français comme deuxième langue de travail des Nations Unies (« La France vous doit une reconnaissance éternelle », lança alors Georges Bidault, président de la délégation française, au Ministre haïtien, « vous serez fait grand officier de la Légion d’honneur », laquelle, bien sûr, se perdit en route) ?--

Enfin reconnue, Haïti enfin existe. Enfin Haïti vient de naître. Oh, que la gestation fut longue et l’accouchement douloureux ! Maintenant, comme le dit le président haïtien, René Préval : « Le pays n'est pas à reconstruire, il est à construire, il est à refonder. Il faut construire l'État et organiser ses institutions avec pour principale finalité le bien-être de tous les Haïtiens. » (Le Nouvelliste, 17 février 2010)

Prions que Dieu place en charge de la construction du pays des leaders capables, remplis de sagesse et d’intelligence, remplis d’amour pour Dieu et pour son peuple, à savoir des Néhémie, des Daniel, des Joseph… De sorte que l’on puisse dire d’Haïti, comme l’a fait la reine de Séba à propos de Salomon et d’Israël : « Il faut remercier le Seigneur ton Dieu qui t'a choisi pour régner sur –Israël– Haïti! C'est parce qu'il aime ce peuple pour toujours que le Seigneur t'en a fait le –roi– président et t'a chargé d'y faire respecter le droit et la justice. » (1 Rois 10:9 –BFC)

HAITI AND FRANCE

On Wednesday February 17th, 2010, for the first time since 1804, a French president went to Haiti for a brief visit of less than 5 hours. Even though this visit was historical, yet it went almost unnoticed by the average Haitian who was more preoccupied by his daily difficulties following the earthquake. However, it was remarkable that it was this French president –Nicolas Sarkozy– who warned the powerful neighbors of Haiti by stating in his speech during that visit: “Haiti to the Haitians.” Remarkable as well those words of the Frenchman Régis Debray to describe the relationship between Haiti and France, taken from his report in 2004 -- Haïti et la France : Rapport à Dominique de Villepin, ministre des Affaires étrangères (Haiti and France: Report to Dominique de Villepin, Minister of Foreign Affairs).

--How many French people know that the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen was initiated in Paris but realized in Saint-Domingue where the rights of the white man became, almost without our knowing it, universal for good? … Again, how many people know that it was the Haitian delegation at the San Francisco Conference of 1945 who, leading the Latin-American votes, and against the Anglo-Saxon hostility, imposed French at the second official and working language of the United Nations (“France owes you an eternal gratitude,” then said Georges Bidault, president of the French delegation, to the Haitian minister, “you will be made Grand Officer National Order of the Legion of Honor,” which, of course, got lost on the way)?--

Finally recognized, Haiti finally exists. Finally Haiti has been born. Oh, how the la gestation was long and the delivery painful! Now, as the Haitian president, René Préval said: “The country is not to be rebuilt, but to be built, it is to be refounded. We need to build the State and organize its institutions with the primary purpose the well-being of all Haitians.” (Le Nouvelliste, 17 February 2010)

Let us pray that God put in charge of the construction of the country capable leaders, full of wisdom and intelligence, full of love for God and for his people, i.e. Nehemiahs, Daniels, Josephs… So that one may say of Haiti, as the queen of Sheba said of Solomon and Israel: “Blessed be the LORD your God, who delighted in you, setting you on the –throne of Israel– presidency of Haiti! Because the LORD has loved –Israel– Haiti forever, therefore He made you –king– president, to do justice and righteousness.” (1 Kings 10:9 – NKJV)

Pour que la lumière brille sur Haïti / So That The Light May Shine Upon Haiti

POUR QUE LA LUMIERE BRILLE SUR HAÏTI - (English version further below) - 

Un mois avant le terrible tremblement de terre qui a frappé Haïti, j’ai envoyé un courriel à la famille et à tous mes compatriotes, pasteurs, amis et connaissances, les invitant à consacrer le 2 janvier au jeûne et à la prière pour notre pays. C’est une pratique que j’observe personnellement depuis 1995, pour qu’Haïti soit enfin délivrée de la malédiction du vaudou, de la corruption et de tous les maux qui la rongent depuis trop longtemps. Curieusement, le 6 décembre 2009, l’objet de mon courriel était Pour que la lumière brille sur Haïti et j’avais accompagné ce message d’une présentation Power Point avec des photos satellite de différents endroits de notre planète, la montrant simultanément de jour et de nuit. Alors, en contraste avec les autres pays assez bien éclairés la nuit, on pouvait voir notre chère patrie plongée dans des ténèbres désespérantes. J’avais donc tiré la leçon disant bien que nous savons que ces ténèbres sont matériellement électriques, nous savons aussi qu’elles représentent les ténèbres spirituelles et morales qui pèsent sur notre pays. Aujourd’hui, après le 12 janvier 2010, je me rends compte que Dieu m’avait inspiré le titre du message pour une raison supplémentaire. Ce titre avait un autre sens prophétique : pour qu’Haïti soit connue et reconnue. En effet, depuis la trentaine d’années que je suis en Europe, la plupart des gens avaient une vague idée d’Haïti et la confondaient souvent avec Hawaï et Tahiti ; ils étaient incapables de la situer sur une carte géographique. D’autres (i.e. grandes puissances, médias, etc.), en revanche, l’ignoraient, la méprisaient et la boycottaient. Mais aujourd’hui, tout le monde connaît Haïti, s’intéresse un tant soi peu à son histoire, et éprouve même de la sympathie pour elle. Pour preuve, cet étonnant élan de solidarité quasi du monde entier et le désir de beaucoup de gens d’adopter des enfants orphelins haïtiens. Certes, en tant que patriote haïtien, on aurait souhaité qu’Haïti soit connue d’une autre manière, mais Dieu, dans Sa Sagesse, connaît tout. Je prie et j’invite tous mes compatriotes chrétiens à prier avec moi pour que d’un peuple de mauvaises nouvelles (coups d’Etat, cyclones, tremblements de terre, etc.), nous devenions un peuple de bonnes nouvelles. Après le 12 janvier, il n’y a pas eu que des pillages, de la violence et toutes sortes de mauvaises choses. Mais on a aussi vu beaucoup de miracles (des sauvetages inespérés, de la louange spontanée même au milieu de la douleur, de la souffrance, et de la tragédie) et on a entendu des témoignages extraordinaires. Oui, Dieu est bon tout le temps. Esaïe 54:10 « Quand les montagnes s'éloigneraient, Quand les collines chancelleraient, Mon amour ne s'éloignera point de toi, Et mon alliance de paix ne chancellera point, Dit l'Éternel, qui a compassion de toi. » Jérémie 31:3 « De loin l'Éternel se montre à moi: Je t'aime d'un amour éternel; C'est pourquoi je te conserve ma bonté. »

SO THAT THE LIGHT MAY SHINE UPON HAITI 

One month before the terrible earthquake that hit Haiti, I sent an e-mail to the family and to all my countrymen, pastors, friends and acquaintances, inviting them to dedicate January 2nd to fasting and prayer for our country. This is a practice that I personally observe since 1995, so that Haiti may be delivered from the curses of voodoo, from corruption and from all the evil that have been devastating it for too long. Curiously, on December 6th, 2009, the subject of my e-mail was So that the light may shine upon Haiti and I put in attachment a Power Point presentation with satellite pictures of different areas of our planet during daylight and by night. Then, in contrast with other countries well lit by night, we could see our dear homeland plunged in a heart-breaking darkness. I then draw the lesson saying that though we know this is materially an electric darkness, but we also know that it represents the spiritual and moral darkness that weighs on our country. Today, after January 12th, 2010, I realize that God had inspired me to give that title to the message for one more reason. That title had another prophetic meaning: So that Haiti may be known and recognized. Indeed, for the thirty years I have been in Europe, most people had a vague idea about Haiti and often mixed it up with Hawaii and Tahiti; they were unable to locate it on a geographic map. Others (i.e. Great Powers, the medias, etc.), however, ignored, despised and boycotted it. But today everybody knows Haiti, is more or less interested in its history, and even has sympathy for it. The proof of this is this extraordinary solidarity expression from almost all over the world and the desire of many people to adopt Haitian orphan children. Maybe, as a Haitian patriot, we would love that Haiti be known in another way, but God, in His Wisdom, knows everything. I pray and invite my Christian countrymen to pray that from a bad-news people (coups d’état, hurricanes, earthquakes, etc.), we become a good-news people. After January 12th, there were not only looting, violence and all sorts of bad things. But we also saw many miracles (unexpected rescues, spontaneous praise to God even in the midst of pain, suffering and tragedy) and we heard many extraordinary testimonies. Yes, God is good all the time. Isaiah 54:10 (NKJV) “For the mountains shall depart And the hills be removed, But My kindness shall not depart from you, Nor shall My covenant of peace be removed,” Says the LORD, who has mercy on you. Jeremiah 31:3 (NKJV) The LORD has appeared of old to me, saying: “ Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; Therefore with loving-kindness I have drawn you.”
