HAÏTI ET LES AMERIQUES -- (English version further below) –-
Saviez-vous qu’Haïti a non seulement contribué à la libération de l’Amérique latine, en apportant son aide généreuse à Simon Bolivar, mais aussi à l’indépendance de leur puissant voisin, les Etats-Unis, via ses soldats appelés les Chasseurs-Volontaires de Saint-Domingue?
Au lendemain du terrible tremblement de terre qui a frappé Haïti, j’étais attristé d’apprendre sur Internet les propos peu charitables d’un certain télévangéliste américain sur la cause de cette catastrophe. Ma première réaction fut de penser en moi-même : « Même si c’était vrai. Que c’était à cause d’un pacte passé par les ancêtres avec le diable. Ce n’était ni le moment approprié, ni la personne adéquate pour tenir un tel discours, sans parler de la manière dont cela a été présenté. » La Parole de Dieu nous dit dans Job 6:14 « Celui qui souffre a droit à la compassion de son ami, Même quand il abandonnerait la crainte du Tout-Puissant. » De plus, pouvons-nous imaginer celui que nous appelons habituellement le Bon Samaritain (Luc 10:25-37) se poser des questions sur la cause du malheur de cet homme qui descendait de Jérusalem à Jéricho avant de venir à son secours? Pouvons-nous aussi imaginer qu’il se pose des questions sur sa nationalité, sa religion, son standing social avant de l’aider ? Tout ce qu’il savait, c’était qu’un prochain, un homme fait à l’image de Dieu, était en difficulté, et qu’il avait urgemment besoin de son aide. Jésus a pris ce Samaritain comme exemple du véritable prochain parce que sa première réaction face au malheur d’autrui n’était pas le jugement, mais la compassion!
Ça, c’était ma réponse. Toutefois, je pense que la réponse de l’ambassadeur haïtien aux Etats-Unis, Raymond Alcide Joseph, a aussi son mérite. Elle apporte un éclairage historique qui a toute sa valeur. Vous pouvez en prendre connaissance sur le lien YouTube plus bas.

Did you know that Haiti not only contributed to the liberation of Latin America through its generous help to Simon Bolivar, but also to the independence of its powerful neighbor, the United States, via its unit of soldiers called Chasseurs-Volontaires de Saint-Domingue?
After the earthquake that hit Haiti, I was saddened to learn on the Internet the insensitive words of a certain American televangelist on the cause of that catastrophe. My first reaction was to think in myself: “Even if this were true. This happened because the ancestors made a pact with the devil. This was not the appropriate time, nor the appropriate person to make such statements, without mentioning the way this was presented.” The Word of God says in Job 6:14 “To him who is afflicted, kindness should be shown by his friend, Even though he forsakes the fear of the Almighty.” Moreover, can we imagine the one we usually call the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) wondering about the cause of the misfortune of the man who was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho before coming to his rescue? Can we also imagine him asking questions about his nationality, his religion, his social standing before helping him? All he knew was that a neighbor, a man made in the image of God, was in difficulty, and he urgently needed his help. Jesus took that Samaritan as example of the genuine neighbor because his first reaction in face of another’s misfortune was not judgment, but compassion!
So, that was my answer. However, I think the response of the Haitian ambassador to the United States, Raymond Alcide Joseph, has also his merit. It brings some historical light that is worth paying attention to. You can listen to it firsthand on the YouTube link below.
